Neal shows off his new tattoo and guards the Golden Spurtle trophy closely
Neal Robertson, reigning World Porridge Making Champion, has something extra up his sleeve as he prepares to defend his title on at this years’ Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship in Carrbridge.
He said: “I am very proud of my achievement and decided to have it tattooed on my arm. I also thought it would intimidate the other competitors, you’ll notice there is room for more dates to be added!”.
The World Porridge Championships are held annually in Carrbridge and attract competitors from around the world. Neal won the title back from America last year achieving some notoriety in the process and he puts his success down to his use of a spon, a double backed spoon that Neal invented, rather than a traditional spurtle to stir his porridge.
Neal, who is proprietor of the Tannochbrae Tearoom, Auchtermuchty, reflected on his year as the Worlds’ best porridge maker: “Having the World Porridge Making title has changed my life in that I have become a bit of a local “celeb” in Fife. I’ve even been recognised in Heathrow Airport! Expectations are running high for this year’s event but over the last year I have been conjuring up some great ideas using my spon (a double sided spoon) and together with my new tattoo, I know I am ready to defend my title!”
The title of World Porridge Making Champion will be awarded to the competitor producing the best traditional porridge, made from pinhead oatmeal, salt and water, with a further award being made for the best “Speciality Porridge.”
The event takes place on Sunday 9 October in Carrbridge and further details can be found online at www.goldenspurtle.com
