Local carver is victorious over international competition

Ian Chalmers with 'Bear Nessecities'

Black Isle based chainsaw carver Ian Chalmers yesterday took centre stage, winning Carve Carrbridge. His carving, ‘Bear Nessecities,’ awarded him the prestigious Claymore trophy and saw him beat off a line up of international carvers from as far afield as USA.

Ian from Culbokie in the Black Isle said it was “unbelievable to win against the strongest field yet at Carve Carrbridge. I felt like the local boy against the best in the world”. Having competed in the competition for six years and achieving third and fourth placing he has now vowed to return in 2011 to defend his title.

Reflecting on his carving Ian revealed it had been a last minute decision – ‘I love carving bears so thought I would do something that I love doing. When I carve bears I normally do vertical groups but for a change today I decided to try a horizontal composition.’

Bob King, USA

Last year’s winner, Bob King from Edgewood, Washington, came second place with his carving, ‘A Hare Raising Experience.’ Bob, always a fan of the atmosphere at the Carve Carrbridge event said, “the crowds today were spectacular with their support, and that drives us to work even harder in the competition. The wood provided was beautiful to work with, and the carvers are a great bunch of guys and gals. Another successful year for Carve Carrbridge.”
