Carrbridge News Best Use of Journalism On the Web

Fergus Thom and Joanne Wood collect the "Best Use of Journalism on the Web" Media Award

Carrbridge News officially launched on the 26th of September 2009. The project came about in response to the lack of any news sharing platform in the village. Carrbridge Films, local entirely youth run film company, decided to spearhead a new, innovative, independent news sharing media production which – contrasting greatly with the previously traditional print newsletter – would present the news in the form of a quarterly digital video news programme.

The first episode was presented online here at www.carrbridgenews.co.uk on the 30th October 2009 and was hailed as a great success – encapsulating local news and presenting it in an interesting and easily digestible way.

Led by young creative Fergus Thom, the project has since gone from strength to strength.

Originally, the project’s sole intention was to produce the quarterly programmes but shortly after the first episode was released – and in response to the high number of visitors returning to the website frequently – the decision was made to also publish written content online, meaning those returning to the website between programmes would not be disappointed by a lack of news!

This addition has had a prominent effect on the overall appeal of the project with a great increase in interest from those outwith the village and the addition of social media as part of the news sharing process has also aided in building our audience.

We are also aware that a large segment of our audience are potential tourists, or those who once lived in the village, as our news “episodes” are watch from over 20 countries worldwide.

Award Winning
